There is no question that Bahubali surpassed all expectations, broke down several barriers, and became the world’s cinema rather than just a Telugu film. Whereas Adipurush, also set in a similar mythological world, failed to deliver the same impact, the most relevant evidence of this is the film’s current situation in Nepal.
On one hand, Bahubali Part 2, released as a sequel to the 2015 film, received magnanimous openings and positive responses in Nepal in around 130 cinema halls across the country, with a record-breaking influx of crowds leading to the opening of more shows and theaters. On the other hand, the recently released Adipurush has had quite the opposite effect. Due to the movie’s inaccurate dialogues regarding Sita’s birthplace (“Janaki is a daughter of India), etc., Nepal has banned the screening of all Hindi cinema, including Adipurush.
The screening of this retelling of the Ramayan by Om Raut has been stopped nationwide, with police deployed to ensure the same for all Hindi cinema until the dialogue regarding Sita’s homeland is recalled and corrected, as it will cause “irreparable damage,” according to the mayor of Kathmandu. Clearly displaying the difference between making a mythological movie of pure fiction vs one that is deeply rooted in people’s religious values and sentiments. Though Rajamouli’s film Bahubali also consists of elements from the Ramayana as the characters are purely their own and not meant to be a portrayal of any of the epic’s roles, the film was able to hit the right sentiments without creating offense, whereas Adipurush, presented as a modern take of the epic, has stirred quite the controversy.
In light of these events, Manoj Muntashir, the film’s dialogue writer, has stated that the makers of the movie have decided to revise several dialogues, while Nepal continues its strict ban choosing to screen English and regional films instead.
