Is TMKOC’s set a male chauvinist? Ex-director speaks

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is on everybody’s mind recently, not for good reasons, though. We all know how much chaos has been dripping out ever since Jennifer Mistry has chosen to bring the cat out of the bag. First the producer Asit Modi, then the whole crew, then troubling Nattu Kaka, then disrespecting Jennifer on the set, the trail of unethical behavior has been unstoppable. The show was going to be remembered for bringing laughter into people’s lives with its 3000+ episodes, but unfortunately, its admirers won’t be able to look at its episodes the same way again.

Malav Raja was the director of TMKOC for 14 straight years and today, he answers if the show is a male chauvinist. In December 2022, he decided to quit and put his long connection with the show to dust. However, he denies the allegation of a male chauvinist that a few actresses have rubbed into the show’s prestige. According to him, the female leads work only 10-12 days a month whereas the male leads work twice as much. As a director, they need to wind up the male actors first because they have to show up the next day which in no way means they hold a personal agenda against women.

He states, “Because after Daya, the show became more male-centric, be it Bhide or Jethalal or Popatlal. They have more stories and consequently more tasks. They are working more hours. So, as a director, I have to see that they remain fresh. There’s nothing chauvinistic here.”
