Is Mohit Raina’s ‘The Freelancer’ another movie like The Kerala Story?

Mohit Raina’s ‘The Freelancer’

Mohit Raina’s nerve wracking movie ‘The Freelancer’ launched it’s trailer today. 1 minute in, and you’ll know it’s very similar to a movie we watched a few months ago. Yes, we’re talking about the Kerala Story.

Avinash Kamath aka Mohit Raina is a ‘freelancer’ or a mercenary i.e. a man who takes up life-threatening projects to save kidnapped for forcefully displaced Indians victimized and trapped in another country. It only becomes worse when he realizes that the girl he’s missioned to save is not just another Indian citizen, but Aaliya, someone he has known since she was 8. Once it occurs to him, it’s not anymore one of his freelancing projects to pocket some money. It’s a personal mission, a stubborn goal to bring Aaliya back, whether or not he comes alive out of it.

Now, this isn’t the first time we’re seeing a plot like this. The Kerala Story wrapped its head around a similar concept of taking girls to a different country for ‘religious sacrifice’ under the name of devotion. But, with Mohit Raina as the lead, will The Freelancer also strike controversies like The Kerala Story did?

For the unversed, Mohit Raina is the popular actor from the TV serial Har Har Mahadev, where he played Shiv Ji’s part.

It’s also intriguing that while The Kerala Story crew was struggling post-release due to the movie’s content and it was even banned in some states, The Freelancer is launching on OTT – Disney+ Hotstar – like an unstoppable bird. Is it partiality on CBFC’s side, or is The Freelancer considered less direct and less offensive than the former Adah Sharma movie?

The trailer starts off with Inayat Khan – an officer – who was fired because of his misconduct on a case. His daughter recently gets married is taken to a different state for a ‘honeymoon’ trip. Before her eyes blink, she’s on Syria’s border, being forced to give up her life for ‘Khilafat’. A direct association between Muslims and terrorism is made in the movie, calling for another wave of controversy and hate from the country. But, makers show what they want and the ones who like it, go ahead with it.

Releasing on September 1st, will the movie cause backlash or appreciated for raising awareness?
