Dipika Chikhlia on Remakes of Ramayan: “Don’t Tamper…

Dipika Chikhlia’s Iconic Role as Sita

Dipika Chikhlia rose to fame in the late 80s for her portrayal of Goddess Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s TV show Ramayan, based on sage Valmiki’s ancient text. The show became a cultural phenomenon, and Dipika’s performance is still remembered fondly by fans. In a recent interview with India Today, Dipika shared her views on the numerous remakes of Ramayan, including the upcoming film directed by Nitesh Tiwari.

Expressing her disillusionment with modern adaptations, Dipika stated that religious texts like Ramayan should not be tampered with. “Honestly, I am quite disillusioned by people who keep making Ramayan because I don’t think you should be doing it,” she said. Dipika believes that each new adaptation attempts to bring a fresh angle or look, which can distort the original story’s essence and impact.

Examples of Unwanted Changes

Dipika pointed out specific instances where modern adaptations have altered characters significantly. She mentioned how Kriti Sanon’s portrayal of Sita in Adipurush included a pink satin saree, and Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of Ravana had a different look, indicating creative liberties that she feels are unnecessary. “One should not tamper around with religious texts,” she asserted, suggesting that filmmakers explore other historical and heroic narratives instead.

Nitesh Tiwari’s Upcoming Epic-Drama

Nitesh Tiwari’s under-production epic, reportedly starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi as Lord Ram and Sita, has been creating buzz. Ranbir is following a strict vegetarian diet and a rigorous training regime for his role. Leaked photos from the sets have added to the anticipation. Arun Govil and Lara Dutta are rumored to play King Dashrath and Queen Kaikeyi, while Bobby Deol, Vijay Sethupathi, and Sunny Deol might portray Kumbhkaran, Vibhishana, and Lord Hanuman, respectively.

Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan remains a highly revered adaptation of the epic. The show, originally aired in the 80s, was re-telecast during the COVID-19 pandemic, gaining immense viewership once again. Dipika Chikhlia’s portrayal of Sita, along with Arun Govil as Lord Ram, Sunil Lahri as Laxman, and Dara Singh as Hanuman, received widespread acclaim. The show’s authentic portrayal of the epic’s characters and story continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many Indians.
