Berlin Festival 2024
The highly anticipated 74th Berlin Film Festival begins on Thursday with the world premiere of Cillian Murphy’s hit movie Small Things Like These. Cillian, who is a strong contender for the Oscars next month for his performance in Oppenheimer, plays an Irish coal dealer in the 1980s who discovers startling secrets that his town’s convent has been holding. Berlin, Germany will host the film festival from February 15–25.
Actor Lupita Nyong’o, a Kenyan-Mexican, will preside over the Berlinale this year as the first Black jury president. Actor-directors Brady Corbet and Jasmine Trinca, directors Ann Hui, Christian Petzold, and Albert Serra, as well as writer Oksana Zabuzhko from Ukraine, will serve on the jury alongside the Oscar winner.
At a ceremony on February 20, Martin Scorsese will be awarded an honorary Golden Bear for lifetime accomplishment. Isabelle Huppert, the legendary French actress who was unable to attend, will travel back to Berlin to claim her unclaimed lifetime achievement from 2022. This year, she makes a comeback with South Korean director Hong Sang-soo’s film A Traveler’s Needs.
