Barack Obama’s daughter Malia Ann makes a promising directorial debut at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival as her short film ”The Heart ”stands out immediately in the short film section, with its extractive approach and understated thematic concern.
The Heart revolves around a lonely man named Joshua (Tunde Adebimpe) who lives alone with his mother (LaTonya Borsay). Little is known about their relationship, but one evening they share an eerily silent dinner in front of the television. After he finishes, he goes upstairs to take a shower. His mother will die of a heart attack within a few minutes.
Joshua becomes a knot of unspoken words and stooped with guilt as he learns of his mother’s desire to carry her preserved heart as part of the will. He’ll also meet a stranger on the street who looks like his mother and say things he hasn’t been able to say all along. It’s a brief close-up scene that gradually leads to the first time he reveals his underlying melancholy. Where will Joshua return? Did he abandon the jar that held the heart? Will he find a new location? As Obama closes the curtain, he wisely leaves some questions unanswered.
