Animal became the highest-grossing Indian film in both Canada and Australia.

Animal’s best-performing markets are Australia and Canada, which both opened to record numbers and now have a new all-time grosser in Animal on the same day.
Indian films have grown in popularity in Canada and Australia in recent years, particularly in the former, thanks to a large influx of migrants from India, primarily from the state of Punjab.

Animal, which features positive portrayals of Punjabi characters and an outstanding musical score, including the chart-topping song “Arjan Velly,” has received a positive response from the Punjabi community worldwide. Coincidentally, on the day it claimed the title of the top-grossing Indian film in Australia and Canada Animal surpassed Gadar 2 to become the highest-grossing film in Punjab.

The Canadian market has tripled in the last five years, as evidenced by the fact that eight of the top ten grossing Indian films in the country were released this year and one was released last year, leaving Padmaavat as the only film from the previous decade. Padmaavat set the market record with CAD 2.82 million in 2018, but the bar has now been raised to CAD 6 million or more, with Animal aiming for a CAD 7 million finish. The day when an Indian film grosses more than CAD 10 million is likely not far off.
