Leadership Beyond Bossiness

In an exclusive interview with India Today Group’s Vice Chairperson, Kalli Purie, Zoya Akhtar shared her unique leadership style. “No, I am not bossy,” she asserted. “I am the boss. There’s a difference.” Her approach transcends traditional notions of authority. Instead, she emphasizes clear communication, collaboration, and empathy.

Clarity and Vision

Akhtar’s clarity of vision is her compass. “I know what I want to achieve from every shot,” she stated. This unwavering focus provides direction to her team, minimizing confusion and delays. Whether it’s capturing the essence of Savitri’s life in Mahanati or venturing into futuristic realms with Project K, her vision guides every frame.

“I like my environment to be peaceful,” Akhtar revealed. She recognizes that creativity thrives when individuals feel relaxed and comfortable. Stress, she believes, hinders productivity. Her mantra? Avoid stress at all costs. Clear communication plays a pivotal role. “By having clear communication,” she explained, “there is less room for confusion or misunderstandings.” When everyone is on the same page, magic happens.

Collaboration and Mastery

Akhtar cherishes collaboration. “I really like to work with people who are masters in their game,” she emphasized. Her team comprises skilled and experienced professionals who share her passion. But it’s not just about expertise; it’s about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

Being well-prepared has a calming effect. “When I am well-prepared,” Akhtar said, “it reflects on everyone around me.” Her meticulous planning ensures that the set is a sanctuary for creativity, not chaos.
