“What you do is the most important thing,” says transgender Grammy awardee Kim Petras

Kim Petras is a German singer and songwriter who started as early as a teenager. Before her full-length project was dropped, she released many singles in the span of 3 years from 2017 to 2019. Many of these singles have been included in Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Not just that, in 2021, she signed with Amigo and Republic Records.

Today, she is 30. But, the time she grabbed the headlines and threw it into space is all the way back in 2009 when Petras was just 16. Early 2000s was the era where women were being shamed for being masculine, men for wanting to wear skirts, and basically people for wanting to be themselves. In a revolting phase like that, Petras went ahead and became the world’s youngest transsexual of the time, at the age of 16. Although the legal, permissible age for the surgical procedure was 18, she got early permission.

Remember the banger Hollywood song Unholy by Sam Smith? Petras was a part of it, for which she won a Grammy recently. She took the opportunity to speak about transsexuality, gender and an individual’s personal choice and freedom.  “I think what you do is the most important thing, not what your gender is.”

Petras further gives an empowering message, “I want to see more equality where labels, gender, sexuality, and skin color don’t separate people so much, and it’s about what you do and what you stand for and what’s inside. Being yourself and being unapologetic about it is enough,”

With this, Kim once again won the hearts of millions of voiceless, quietened souls who wish to openly embrace and enjoy their sexualities.
