I was the first choice for Padmavat, says Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the iconic Bollywood actress, recently revealed her connection to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, “Padmaavat.” While Deepika Padukone ultimately portrayed the role of Rani Padmini, it turns out that Aishwarya was initially considered for the part. I was the first choice for Padmavat, says Aishwarya Rai.

Bhansali’s First Choice

In an interview with Spotboye, Aishwarya candidly shared, “He didn’t get the Bajirao for me. He wanted me to do ‘Padmaavat’ but could not get the Khilji for me at the casting time. So, that’s how it didn’t happen.” Sanjay Leela Bhansali envisioned Aishwarya as the regal queen, but the role eventually went to Deepika due to casting constraints.

The Casting Dilemma

“Padmaavat” faced numerous challenges during its production. The film’s depiction of Rajasthani culture stirred controversy, and the Karni Sena’s protests added to the turmoil. Deepika Padukone, who portrayed Rani Padmini, even received death threats. However, Aishwarya Rai could have faced similar challenges had she taken the role.

I was the first choice for Padmavat, says Aishwarya Rai:

Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Leela Bhansali share a successful collaboration history. Their previous films, “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” and “Devdas,” were massive hits at the box office. Their creative synergy and mutual respect have always resulted in memorable cinematic experiences.

Missed Opportunities

Interestingly, Bhansali had initially planned to make “Bajirao Mastani” with Aishwarya and Salman Khan. Unfortunately, their relationship ended before the project could materialize. Eventually, “Bajirao Mastani” found its way to Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, while “Padmaavat” became a landmark film in 2018.

A Hopeful Future

Despite missing out on “Padmaavat,” Aishwarya Rai expressed her desire to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali again. She stated, “The intention is always there to work together, but it didn’t happen. We both loved working with each other, so let’s see, whenever it is meant to be.”

As fans eagerly await their next collaboration, Aishwarya continues to shine in the world of cinema. Her recent Bollywood film, “Fanney Khan,” released to mixed reviews, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
