Trisha – Thalapathy Vijay Ghilli Re-release Box Office Collections

The 2004 blockbuster Ghilli, starring Vijay and Trisha, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a re-release in select theatres across Tamil Nadu on April 20. The anticipation for the re-release was palpable, evident from the record-breaking advance ticket sales, which touched about Rs 3 Crore.

This figure marked a new milestone in terms of pre-sales for a re-release. The movie was not only screened across India but also in a few other countries, indicating the enduring popularity of the film. Reports suggest that Ghilli raked in approximately Rs 12 Crore on its first day back in theatres, a testament to its continued box office dominance even two decades after its initial release.

Trade analysts had initially anticipated that the film would achieve sales of around Rs 10 crore on its first day. However, fans exceeded expectations, propelling Ghilli to become the highest-grossing film on its re-release day. Originally released on April 16, 20 years ago, the updated 4K DOLBY version of Ghilli is now captivating audiences once again. Directed by Dharani, the Tamil version of the film set the box office ablaze upon its original release, and its resurgence in theatres is further proof of its enduring appeal.

Social media platforms were abuzz with videos of fans celebrating in theatres and thoroughly enjoying their rewatch of Ghilli. The film is the latest addition to a growing trend of popular and classic Tamil films being given theatrical re-runs. Previously, fan-favorite movies like Vaaranam Aayiram, 3, Aalavandhan, Muthu, and others were also re-released in cinemas, underscoring the nostalgia and love for these cinematic gems.

Tamil Re-released Films

Prior to the re-release of Ghilli, Suriya’s Vaaranam Aayiram held the record for the highest box office collection on its re-release day, having collected Rs 6.10 crores. Additionally, superstar Rajinikanth‘s Baasha amassed around Rs 5 crore on its re-release. Rajinikanth remains the only star to have two films in the top four box office collections from re-releases.

The star-studded cast of Ghilli includes Thalapathy Vijay, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Ashish Vidyarthi, Tanikella Bharani, Janaki Sabesh, Jennifer, Dhamu, Mayilsamy, Nagendra Prasad, Ponnambalam, Pandu, Vinod Raj, T.K. Kala, Aadukalam Murugadoss, Brahmanandam, Karate Raja, Maran, Pondy Ravi, Suruli Manohar, Vimal, Appukutty, Pandi, and Choreographer Shobi, among others, who played pivotal roles in the film.
