Tamannaah Bhatia Summoned by Maharashtra Cyber Cell in IPL Streaming

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia finds herself embroiled in a legal matter concerning the illegal streaming of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, as she has been summoned by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell for questioning. This development comes after actor Sanjay Dutt was also called in for interrogation in connection to the same case.

According to reports, Tamannaah Bhatia is scheduled to appear before the Maharashtra Cyber Cell on April 29 to provide her statement regarding the alleged illegal streaming of IPL 2023 matches on the Fairplay App, leading to significant financial losses for Viacom. The network has claimed damages amounting to crores of rupees due to the unauthorized streaming.

Sanjay Dutt was previously summoned by the Cyber Cell on April 23, but due to his absence from the country at the time, he requested a rescheduled date for his statement recording.

The investigation stems from a complaint filed by Viacom18 in September 2023, accusing the Fair Play App of infringing upon their intellectual property rights (IPR) by unlawfully broadcasting IPL matches despite Viacom holding exclusive rights to the content. The network has reportedly incurred losses exceeding Rs 100 crore as a result of the unauthorized streaming.

Several prominent figures from the entertainment industry, including rapper Badshah, actresses Jacqueline Fernandez and Tamannaah Bhatia, along with actor Sanjay Dutt, have been summoned for questioning in connection to the case. Additionally, an employee of the Fair Play App was arrested in December 2023 in relation to the illicit streaming allegations.

As the investigation unfolds, the involvement of celebrities and the entertainment industry in such cases sheds light on the challenges of intellectual property rights enforcement in the digital age, emphasizing the importance of combatting piracy and protecting creators’ rights.
