Sonali Bendre Shock Over Fan’s Alleged Suicide in the 1990s

Sonali Bendre, a prominent Bollywood actress known for her roles in films such as Diljale, Duplicate, and Sarfarosh, recently expressed disbelief and shock over reports that a man allegedly committed suicide because he couldn’t meet her during her visit to Bhopal in the 1990s. The actress shared her thoughts on this tragic incident during a conversation with Mayank Shekhar on Mid-Day’s The Bombay Film Podcast.

Reacting to the news, Sonali Bendre said, “Yeh sach hai? [Is it true]? How can someone…” She was visibly stunned by the report. When asked if she had ever encountered other instances of extreme fan behavior, she recounted receiving fan mails and wondering if the letters written in blood were genuine. She remarked, “There’d be fan mails. We wondered to test if it was in actual blood. I’d be shattered if it was. Best to appreciate and leave it at that.”

Discussing her views on fan culture and the extreme obsession towards Bollywood stars, Sonali shared, “I couldn’t understand that kind of obsession for somebody.” She elaborated that she finds it difficult to comprehend how anyone can place another human being on such a high pedestal, as they are bound to fall eventually. She emphasized, “I could never put somebody up on a pedestal to that extent.”

Sonali Bendre began her career as a model in her teenage years, transitioning into Bollywood through various advertisements. She quickly rose to fame with notable projects like Diljale (1996), Duplicate (1997), Major Saab (1998), and Dhai Akshar Prem Ke (2000). Her films Sarfarosh and Hum Saath Saath Hain recently celebrated their 25th anniversaries.

After a hiatus due to her battle with cancer, Sonali made a comeback with the web series The Broken News in 2022. Reflecting on her journey and how her illness changed her perspective, she shared with Hindustan Times in an April 2024 interview, “My illness has taught me that beauty is in imperfection. Perfect things are not as beautiful as imperfect things are. I have learnt to love my imperfections. Now, I don’t want to be stuck with just the looks. I want something beyond that which is where Broken News comes in.”
