5 years of Mahanati: The film that made smile through the tears ; magic still lives on

Classic films are made rare and Mahanati tops the list. Mahanati, the biopic of Savitri, directed by Nag Ashwin, got released on May 9, 2018. Biopics are not new to the Tollywood industry, but Mahanati is something special. Mahanati is one of the film’s in this decade which made many theatres houseful with the majority of seats occupied by senior citizens is probably the best biopic made till now in Telugu cinema.

The film bankrolled by Swapna Cinemas had been critically acclaimed and the director’s choice of artists is fantastic. Right from the stars to the technicians, everyone did their job well and sculptured the film well.

Mahanati boasts a big star cast which includes Samantha, Keerthy Suresh, and Dulquer Salmaan. Savitri is regarded as one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema. She sported different hats during her glorious career which started from 1950 and lasted until the late 80s. She had directed films, sung songs, and produced movies even in those days when the film industry was heavily dominated by men (not that anything has changed now). Any lover of cinema should see the rise and fall of this silver-screen icon. Mahanti film made the same. It made us experience wonderful journey of a legendary actress.

Most of the scenes in the film have been captured with sincerity and sensitivity. Much of ‘Mahanati’s sincerity and authenticity is derived out of its director Nag Ashwin’s conviction in retelling a piece of history that most of us have forgotten.

To be honest, before watching Mahanati, Savitri was just an actress to many. There were many controversial interviews given by some of her contemporaries that surfaced online and they were contradictory. But after watching we come to know ‘what a kind of adorable human being she is’. The strong character of Savitri, with her attitude of never accepting defeat, connects everyone to the core and made many to leave the theater with a heavy heart and till now, the movie magic continues.
