Sara Ali Khan has been investing her time in books lately. Sara took to her Instagram handle as she read Sigmund Freud’s book. She happened to underline a few lines in the page as she posted it which read, “Fear of this critical authority – a fear that underlies the whole relationship and amounts to a need for punish- ment – is the manifestation of a drive on the part of the ego, which has become masochistic under the influence of the sadistic super-ego and devotes a portion of its inherent drive for internal destruction to establishing an erotic bond with the super-ego. One should not speak of conscience until the super-ego.”.
Sigmund Freud is the father of psychology he explains the need to understand oneself through various studies. One of his famous theories is psychosexual theory which also talks about the ID, Ego, and Superego.
While the Id is the urge to want something so badly, the Ego strikes a balance between wants and needs and the Super Ego explains the morals that limit a person to do anything out of their boundaries. The underlined lines suggest the amount of gender-set rules and regulations that got individuals to suppress their needs in the name of morals. Sara’s story implies how gender bias began to root in an individual in the name of morals.
